At Center for WorkLife Law (University of California’s Hastings College of Law) there have been a significant number of female attorneys wanting to come back to practice since the recession and not wishing to continuing to with pausing from their careers. The centre helps the women in this regard. Joan Williams of the centre said that initially they were surprised to see so many women returning back. Many came because their husbands were unemployed while others were apprehensive that this would happen to their spouses.
The downturn in the economy, telling on family finances, has been pressurizing women to return to employment. But it has not been an easy task. The Center for Work-Life Policy based in New York said that women who have now walked off the ramp are pausing for a longer periods than before. In 2009 the average was 2.7 years but in 2004 it was 2.2 years. The weak economy is responsible for this.

It has also been more challenging to get back to work opines 20% of the women who are trying to make a re-entry.

In general the employment scenario is unkind on both genders. Daniel Indiviglio of The Atlantic comments that for men the going is tougher to find jobs because of the type of industries that they dominate. He said, “Construction in particular will likely be a major struggle, while education and health services should endure”. Analyzing the report of the Federal Reserve released on 2010 February he noted that men fared worse than the opposite sex during the time of the recession as it was the male dominated industries that took the worst battering.

The recent report on jobs indicates that both genders will now be facing hard days. Economist Heather Boushey of American Progress based in Washington D.C. deals with policy matters and advocacy groups. She said that massive debts of the government have forced local administrations to slice jobs. This has been particularly hard on women. Before the recession women were holding half the jobs in the government. Their proportion was 61.4% of the local posts and 57% of the local as well as state and federal positions.
Boushey noted, “The reality is that families need women in the workforce because men lost so many jobs. But it’s not enough to want a job. It’s a very sad game of musical chairs for both men and women, where there is one chair and five people. When the music stops, only one person will have a seat”.
